China gets a glimpse of its cosmic quarry

China has captured its first image of an asteroid it plans to rob.

The target? Kamo’oalewa. Also known as 2016 HO3.

It is a “quasi-moon” which is a weird name for a rock that mostly orbits the sun, but hangs tight around Earth because of gravitational tugs.

The Tianwen-2 probe made the trip. It launched back in 2025 on a Long March 3B rocket from the Xichang spaceport. A long way. Roughly 620 million miles. Over 1 billion kilometers.

It finally settled into position about 12 miles from the rock. That is close enough for the cameras but safe enough for the hardware.

What are we looking at?

The photo dropped on July 2 according to Xinhua.

The rock itself is tiny. Maybe 50 to 65 feet wide. Asymmetrical. Ugly? Sure. Beautiful? Probably.

Kamo’oalewa is a small, irregular body caught in Earth’s gravitational embrace, circling the sun in a dance that keeps it near home.

Its origins are a mystery.

Or they were. A study in Nature Astronomy from 2024 suggests a violent backstory. Maybe a massive impact hit our moon somewhere between 1 million and 1,000 million years ago. Maybe it knocked a chunk off the Giordano Bruno crater. That chunk then floated away, wandering the void until it found itself here.

If Tianwen-2 drags some of this dirt back to Earth, scientists might finally know.

Why does it matter?

Quasi-satellites are common. We have at least seven known ones right now. Their orbits are less stable than a real moon’s. Earth’s gravity catches them occasionally. Then it flings them out again.

It’s a chaotic neighborhood.

China is new to the game.

Japan did it first with Hayabusa. It brought back stuff from Itokawa in 2010. OSIRIS-REx from the US grabbed samples from Bennu** in 2023. That mission turned up amino acids. Building blocks for life. Who knew space rocks were so biologically active?

Tianwen-1 went to Mars in 2020 with a rover and orbiter. That worked. Now China wants that same luck with asteroids.

The probe will spend almost a year scanning Kamo’oalewa with 11 scientific instruments. Then it will try to grab a piece.

It might work.

It might not.
