The Bleach Filler List: A Guide to What to Skip and Why

3

Bleach is a titan of the shonen genre. It has hundreds of episodes. It has a sprawling, complex narrative. But it also has a reputation for padding.

If you are trying to navigate the sea of episodes without drowning in filler, you need a strategy. This list breaks down exactly what is canon, what is filler, and where the line blurs.

The Bount Saga: A Long Detour

The first major block of filler appears early. It starts with the Bount Arc (Episodes 64–91).

These are spiritual vampires. They are introduced loosely. They have little to do with the main plot. Many fans skip this entire stretch.

It continues with the Bount Assault on Soul Society Arc (Episodes 92–109). The Bounts invade Soul Society here. It wraps up that storyline. It remains filler-heavy. Unless you enjoy seeing original characters fight, there is little reason to watch.

Standalone Episodes and Comedic Breaks

Between major arcs, the show drops random filler episodes.

  • Forest of the Menos (Episodes 147–149): This is a standalone story. It happens during a canon arc. You can skip it without missing a beat.
  • Don Kanonji and the Karakura Superheroes (Episodes 213–214): Don Kanonji is a cheesy TV personality. Local kids dress as superheroes. It is played for laughs. It is entirely filler.
  • Beach Episode (Episode 228): Classic anime trope. The Soul Reapers go to the beach. It has nothing to do with the story. It is a break from the action.
  • Side Story! Ichigo and the Magic Lamp (Episode 287): Hitsugaya deals with a feud in the human world. It is bitter and hilarious. It is fun. It is not essential.
  • New Year’s Party Special (Episode 303): Rukia and her stuffed rabbit. It is lighthearted. Skip it unless you are a hardcore Rukia fan.

The Zanpakuto Tales: The Exception

Not all filler is created equal.

The Zanpakuto Unknown Tales Arc (Episodes 230–265) is different. The Shinigami’s zanpakuto spirits rebel. They gain physical form. It dives deep into character relationships. It is one of the most interesting filler arcs. You might not want to skip it.

However, the Beast Swords Arc (Episodes 256–265) follows. It involves rogue zanpakuto. It stretches the concept thin. Many fans skip this continuation.

Captain Amagai and the Impostors

There are two arcs that stand out for other reasons.

The New Captain Shusuke Amagai Arc (Episodes 168–189) is a complete detour. It focuses on a new squad captain and his secrets. It offers solid character interactions. The fights are decent. It is not canon, but it is watchable.

The Gotei 13 Invading Army Arc (Episodes 317–342) is another standout. Impostors invade Soul Society. The animation is solid. The storyline is more focused than most filler. It is considered one of the better arcs in this category.

The Gray Area: Canon vs. Filler

Some episodes confuse viewers.

  • Episode 298: This is partially filler. It connects to the fourth Bleach movie. It contains some canon scenes. It sits in the middle.
  • The Lost Substitute Shinigami Arc (Episodes 343–366): This is canon. It is based on the manga. It feels like a cooldown after Aizen’s defeat. It is part of the official story. Do not skip this.

Why Does Bleach Have So Much Filler?

Anime production often falls behind manga publication. When that happens, studios create original content. This is filler.

It allows the manga to get ahead. It gives the show breathing room. But it also creates a massive backlog of non-canon material.

Should You Watch It All?

No.

If you want to follow Ichigo Kurosaki’s journey through the manga storyline, you need to avoid distractions. Stick to the canon material.

But if you have time, arcs like the Zanpakuto Unknown Tales and Gotei 13 Invading Army offer decent animation. They provide character exploration that canon sometimes rushes.

The choice is yours. The list is clear. What you do with it depends on how much of your life you want to dedicate to Soul Society.
