How Mold-A-Rama Works

How the #Mold-A-Rama machine creates hollow plastic statues

You put in a quarter. The machine is humming. Inside that glass box, a small factory works in real time. This is not magic. Injection Blow Molding. You can turn cold plastic into a warm toy in a minute, and the results are amazing.

Mechanical seal

The process starts with two aluminum molds. They look like half a dream, and each has reverse imprint of the figure you just bought. It’s a bear. Castle. dinosaur. Hydraulics drive the two parts together. Press until it is completely sealed. Almost complete.

There is a hole in the bottom. essential. Material gets in and air gets out. The mold itself is a hollow chamber. The coolant (usually antifreeze or water) circulates through pipes connected to the top. This keeps the walls cool. Walls must be kept cool. If you don’t do this, the plastic won’t harden. It will just slump.

Plastic injection molding

There is a storage tank under the mold for storing molten polyethylene. It sits there and waits. When the cycle begins, the pump forces the molten plastic into the cavity between the closed mold halves. They enter through a hole in the bottom. The cavity fills up.

Then the twisting begins. Compressed air is blown into the center. This is the “blow molding” part of blow molding. The air forces the liquid plastic against the cooling wall. It presses it hard. The uncooled plastic inside the core is squeezed out. It drains back through a hole and returns to the tank below. The characters become hollow. light. Ready.

The Ejection

Mold separation. Use a rod to push the finished statue into the opening of the dispenser. It’s a little hot. The outer surface is solid and to handle immediately. But what about inside? It’s still softening.

Some machines have stickers. They warn you to turn the character upside down. Allow the heat to dissipate. Allow to cool. If you don’t do this, you might end up with a warped bear. Or a sad dinosaur.

“The outside is hard enough, but the character isn’t fully set yet at this point.”

This is an easy deal. Money for a moment of creation. Observe the flow of plastic. You wait. You take your prize. It’s still warm. Just like the memory of why you stopped in the first place.
