Dall Sheep: Life, Death and Horns on the Rocks of the Arctic Cliff

This agile creature is also known as the white sheep after the American zoologist W.H. Dall.

They usually live in groups of 5 to 10 individuals and feed on grasses, sedges, and herbaceous plants that grow in rugged, rocky terrain that is difficult for other animals, including predators, to access.

Winter migration to the lowlands offers better feeding sites, and large migration groups often form on open platforms for the sake of population security. Because that’s where they’re vulnerable.

Females remain solitary in the summer and gather in the fall during the breeding season. During this period, the males show strong aggression, sometimes shocking the males with violent duels. The winners of such contests gain a better position in the herd and access to the females.
